December Violations Emergency Room (VER)

Report No. 4

Since the first day of the December demonstrations in Sudanese cities, VER has monitored selective and systematic violations against students of Darfur origin. The security forces raided ahouse where Darfur students reside in Sennar province, and 41 students were arrested and deportedto Khartoum.

On December 28 National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) attacked a house inhabited byDarfuri students in the Duroushab neighborhood of Khartoum state, and arrested 9 of them.

NISS tortured the detainees, and later paraded them on state television, confessing that they were a subversive cell trained in Israel. VER confirmed from reliable sources that the detained students had not left the country before.

Civil society activists reported that the Khartoum government’s approach seeks to divide citizens on ethnic grounds, in order to continue its rule. NISS has targeted and extracted false confessions from Darfur students in order to isolate them and intimidate them from participating in the current movement.

Lawyers reported that the total number exceeds 43 detainees, stressing that forcing students to make confessions under torture is not legally acceptable. They pointed out that there is a petition ready for submission to the Attorney General of the Ministry of Justice. They also noted that the government continues this approach because it assumes ignorance in the people , So it is necessary to expose them and address the local and international authorities with the facts.
